Ty & Taylor McFerrin @ The Knitting factory 4.13.08 April 12, 2008

Filed under: concerts & events, tunes — flashyjazzy @ 5:14 pm

If you do not know about Ty, then you need to slap yourself three times and get with the program. And very under-rated UK artist that has lyrical skills for days. My homegirl, AriTaurus420 Photography.

She also put me on to Taylor McFerrin, who is Bobby McFerrin’s son. You remember the song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”? Well, Taylor has taken up his father’s musical talents and is one of the sickest Beat-boxer’s I’ve ever heard. Funny thing is I check out his Myspace Pg and was listening to his music, was introduced to him, and didn’t realize he beatboxed until he was on stage beatboxing. I laugh at myself every time I think of that nite. You can find his album on iTunes, or check out his music, listen closely to the music, because he is the one making the noises that sounds like instruments.

But back to Ty, I will hopefully have the honor to sit down quickly and interview him for a project I was invited to do. With permission, hopefully I’ll be able to post that interview.

The thing about Ty is that he is very, very under rated. He has a smooth voice, laden with the British accent that most of us Americans love. He doesn’t sound like the heavily marketed Dizzee Rascal - who’s show I attend when he was in BK @ Southpaw, I’ll post those pics and review shortly. and we all know how M-I-A is marketed and promoted as this dope chick, but I don’t like her or her music, and she is always doped up!

But Ty, is one of those fun lyricist, like I would put him in the same category as Mos Def, Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, but for the UK. Like you can tell he comes from the 90’s era where The Jungle Brothers was the shit, De La Soul was heavily rotated, and Hip Hop was well seasoned with a vast variety of lyrical skills.

He has this comedic air to him on some of his tracks, and on the ones where you can tell he is speaking about an experience he had, he expresses his views and opinion in the most melodic way. Like “Music 2 Fly 2″ off of his last album, Closer. Just listening to that track gives me goosebumps. And if you are listening to it in your iPod the way the music plays makes the NYC streets look like a musical. Or the song that is playing in my head now as I write this blog, “The Tale” off of his first album, Akward, where he talks about a girl he meet and what happens when she comes over to the crib. The story is funny in an way that you would not expect, because he over steps his boundaries and she checks him, lol.

The sad thing about Ty’s music is it is somewhat hard to find, but you can Google his albums, Akward, Upward, or Closer. Check out his Myspace too, you can always hit him up and see where he has some of his albums.

Or you can do one better, and come check these fellas out tomorrow @ The Knitting Factory. The tixx are only $15 @ the Door, $12 in advanced, which is a good deal considering these guys are both equally talented.

Come on out and Support!!!

New Music Alert ~ Janelle Monae April 5, 2008

Filed under: tunes — flashyjazzy @ 8:12 pm

If you love music the way I do, then you should completely understand the feeling that goes through you when you hear that artist, who’s music is so soul rocking, you can’t help but get goosebumps or chills down your back, when you hear them for the first time. From that point on, you go on a somewhat rampage to find more of their music, more of their amazing gift.

Well, that is how I felt when I first discovered this wonderful lady, Janelle Monae. Miss Monae is from Kansas City, Kansas. She was first featured on the The Purple Ribbon All- Stars “Got Purp” album by Big Boi, of Outkast. She later was featured again on the Idlewild Soundtrack, on the songs “Call The Law” and “In Your Dreams”.

Her sound to me is like a new-aged Kelis, but better. There is definitely a nagging comparsion to Andre 3000’s eclectic musical talents and style. In a way where when you hear her sci-fi storyline for ‘Violet Stars Happy Hunting’, she opens up saying “I’m an alien from outter space. I’m a cyber-girl without a face. I’m a product of metal”. You can only imagine where she’s going to go with her lyrical content.

But she also has a beautiful singing voice and can definitely take you there with her pitch and range. Sweet and sultry, she gives you chill bumps when you hear her sing a ballad.

Her band is amazing, the beats are catchy, but yet you’ve never heard of a sound quite like hers.

Personally, I read a piece on her last year over on the Clutch Magazine website. That was the moment when I craved more from Miss Monae, but there was none for me at that time.

I can’t say what made me look for her again. Oh, it was the second piece Clutch did on her in Jan ‘08, and I’ve been ok ever since. But, there is no actual album dropping from Janelle until this Summer. I must correct myself in calling it an “album” as she and her Label, The Wondaland Arts Society, have remastered the theory of how music is perceived, and called her debut a ’suite’.

To define the term ’suite’ I will have to quote what Janelle and The Wondaland Society say themselves:

The concept of the suite release was inspired by the observation that the youth of the iPod generation no longer buy or listen to entire albums. They listen to playlists. They grab their favorite three to four songs from a particular album, add those to a playlist, and then discard the rest of the album like yesterday’s news.

In order to re-excite the public, the label is forced to do guest spots and remixes, additional videos and deluxe CD releases….all in a vain attempt to intrigue the record buyer again.

With this in mind, the Wondaland Arts Society has decided to release its content in a quarterly “suite” fashion. Like successful serial programs such as Lost or Heroes, this release schedule allows dynamic artists such as Janelle Monáe to always stay fresh: she always has a new chapter or musical world to visit, a new song raiding blogs and earbuds.

As one can imagine, this suite model continually excites the consumer and music lover, while creating countless opportunities for Ms. Monáe to experiment artistically and grow creatively with her audience.

Pretty neat idea. She was recently signed to Bad Boy and did a showcase show for the Industry folks, this past Thursday @ The Blender Theater. I’ll post pics from that next.

Check out some of her tunes. My Favorite songs, actually. So I’d consider yourself lucky :)

Music Debate - 50 vs. Kanye *UPDATED* September 13, 2007

Filed under: reviews, tunes — flashyjazzy @ 6:20 am

curtis-cvr.jpggraduation-cvr.jpg

Seems like everyone is getting in on the hype between two of Hip Hop’s biggest rappers. From MTV, BET, Rolling Stone, The LA Times, and even Amazon.com are all contributing to the hype & debate over who will out sell the other.

Yesterday, on 106 & Park, 50 & Kanye both performed. Both giving great performances, but clearly Kanye shut it down while performing ‘Big Brother’, song tributing his relationship with Jay Z, and then Jay Z comes out singing ‘Encore’. Great moment. It made me feel like the fan that I am of both Kanye & Jay. The Roc was definitely in the building. Peep performance below

When asked why you should go out and get their albums each one had 10 sec to sell their album. From what the first day of sales show Kanye is in the lead with more than 850K, leading by more than 200K albums than 50. Hear their answers below

Yesterday, Amazon went ahead and even put up a bar graph to show the difference in sales percentage. See below

amazon-chart.jpg

Today the top selling album is Graduation and in 3rd place is, Curtis.

I haven’t heard the full Curtis album yet, but I heard Graduation and it is a GREAT album.  Lyrically and with musically, Kanye definitely showed us that he is not going anywhere any time soon and that he takes this music shit very seriously.

I would love to quote him on Champion, which is a hit song.  Saying “Lauryn Hill said her heart was in Zion.  I wish her heart still was in Rhyming” matching it with a sultry voice that I swore was Lauryn’s until you hear the woman sing the hook.

Then you have I Wonder, a jazz sound paired with a sick beat.

Good Life, I didn’t think this was a possiblity.  T-Pain is my guilty pleasure artist.  As much as I don’t want to like his music, I end up lovin all his songs from I’m Sprung to Bartender.  And even Plies shit.  Of course, you know I’m having this in Top Played List

Flashing Lights, 1 of the HOTTEST songs on the album.  And definitely for the Chick getting ready for the club!  Keepin’ your head boppin’ and your foot tappin

The Glory, sounds like a Jackson 5 track mixed with some gospel inspiration

I am not discriminating on the Curtis Album when i hear it I will give my mini reviews on certain songs.  So don’t think I am bias… YET!

It’s less than a week to the debut of each man’s new albums. I’m going to listen to the albums and give my 2¢, but in the mean time…

• How do you think each man will do on the 11th?

• Do you think 50 will suffer b/c his video was leaked?

• Or do you think Kanye will suffer because his album was leaked?

• How do you think will do better?

• Do you even fu¢kin’ care?!?

Lauryn Hill Speaks… Well, sorta August 20, 2007

Filed under: concerts & events, reviews, tunes — flashyjazzy @ 6:53 am

I was speaking with my boy, Subtitled Opus, & we were talking about Ms. Hill & her past performance @ Wingate Park 2 weeks ago. We both heard mixed reviews. We I speak with my other friends, everyone seems to know this or that, but all of the facts about Ms. Hill are sketchy.
•Pras said there won’t be a Fugees Reunion, due to Ms. Hills schedule/ attitude (something to that factor)
•She has an album coming out in 2008
•Rohan left her
•She has 5 of his children (It’s four- check her Myspace page to see)

I found this interview on youtube posted on August 2nd and I thought it was juicy, kinda.

Many rumors are circling her name. There are plenty of fans who are expecting the old Lauryn hill from 10 years ago to re-emerge and do the Hollywood shuffle like she’s never left the stage. Let’s all remember that she was WAY different when she did the MTV Unplugged set 6 yrs ago. There’s no way she is going to be the Old Lauryn. We have to allow her to experiment, yes on our dime & time. Why, you ask? Because if you are a true fan of someone you are a fan of their musical talent. Being a true fan entails you to expect that artist to try new things. Sometimes artists/ musicians are too talented. You may hear a song they wrote sung by someone else. Not getting off the subject., Ms. Hill is making a comeback having only had 1 solo album and 1 Fugees album under her belt.
Whatever drove her to getting back on the stage and in the studio we ALL have to appreciate, because she is giving us SOMETHING, which we all know is better than NOTHING.
And I will say this last thing before I depart…

Ms. Hill and Dave Chappelle are a lot alike. How ironic that he was the one who got the Fugees to reunite. But what I mean when I say they are alike is, because with their great gift of talent, with the fame and success, they could not handle the transition that their lives would go through. Both of them deserted a undoubtably successful careers. And we the fans are very critical in how we rate their performances after leaving us screaming for more. But we have to support the Black artist - at least the ones who have something worth hearing. As crazy as Lauryn maybe we have to give her a chance to get comfortable back in the limelight and expect the rewards to be promising when she gives us beautiful music. - I hope I don’t have to eat my optimistic words, :)

Music Alert ~ Natasha Bedingfeld August 19, 2007

Filed under: tunes — flashyjazzy @ 8:54 am

press_03_img.jpg

For quite sometime I have been wanting to know if the song “Unwritten”, the theme song for the MTV show “The Hills”. It sounds like Pink, but it’s not!

Her name is Natasha Bedingfield. Being compared to Christina Aguilera and Pink ( I was close), she has been topping the Billboard Charts in the UK, and here in the states. Having a #1 single in the US, and a #1 UK debut album, and over 6.5 million units shifted worldwide, Natasha Bedingfield is the UK’s biggest female pop star. Last year, Natasha had the first British chart topping hit in almost twenty years.

She is a force to be reckoned with. Her talent has gotten her invited by her hero Prince to jam with him at a private party; her song ‘Unwritten’ proved to be the most played song on mainstream American radio in 2006.

Her first album, released in 2004, got her recognition, for the outspoken lyrics on her take on life. Her sophomore album N.B., she explains as:

“I want to make music that matches who I am. My first album was about independence and opportunism. I’m still very independent and I find it hard to let go of that freedom, but I’m in a different place now. I’ve been dating, searching for a partner, looking for Mr Right…”

Her sophomore album, N.B., is THE Break-up album. Just the titles alone, make any girl feel like they have therapeutic tunes to mend their heart. But to hear her voice & lyrics, makes the experience - comforting.

Proving that affairs of the heart, although difficult, make for excellent song-writing material. Each track on the album explores a varying stage of the ‘relationship’ story, and the issues, experiences, and processes that come with these stages: from the lonely place of never feeling like you will fit with anyone (Soulmate), through the flirting, dancing stage where you feel you might (How Do You Do?), to the moment at which the game playing ends and open honesty prevails (Say It Again).

N.B. forthcoming single ‘I Wanna Have Your Babies’, due to be accompanied by a colourful and entertaining video from Dave Meyers (Pink, Missy Elliot, Outkast). Lyrically, ‘I Wanna have Your Babies’, touches on a female’s fight to reign in their natural disposition to ‘rush into things’ in an effort to find that elusive ‘one’, that potential father to their children. Musically it is distinctly ‘Natasha Bedingfield’ - the voice to melt radios, the beats that drop either side of the Atlantic, the arrangements that are undeniably quirky, but still, somehow, work.

Currently, Natasha is on tour with Justin Timberlake - who this past Thursday performed @ Madison Square Garden.

Here are some of her songs! Click “Launch Standalone Player” to hear tracks

Music Alert ~ Gym Class Heroes August 13, 2007

Filed under: tunes — flashyjazzy @ 10:18 pm

They go by the name of Gym Class Heroes. And they are one of the hottest bands I’ve heard in awhile.

Considered to be an Alternative Hip Hop Band. An Alternative Hip Hop band are those who use live instruments, versus the traditional production tools used in Hip Hop.

The original members, Travis McCoy (singer) and Matt McGinley (drummer) first met in 97′ in their H.S. Gym Class - hence, the band’s name, Gym Class Heroes, which came together in ‘97. And the current members are Travis McCoy, Matt McGinley, Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo (Guitarist), Eric Roberts (Bass).

In ‘01 Gym Class Heroes debuted their first album “… For The Kids”. From ‘03 - ‘06 Gym Class Heroes have toured with the Van’s Warped Tour. Putting out two more albums, “The Paper Chronicles” (’05), and their most recent release “As Cruel As School Children” (’06).

Patrick Stump, a member of Fall Out Boy, one of the single “Taxi Driver” and invited Gym Class Heroes to one of their shows. After this meeting, the band decided to sign with Decaydance Records/ Fueled by Ramen.

Something that I noticed in the lyrics of some of Gym Class Heroes songs are Travis’s references to other songs by the band. Like in the hit single “Cupid’s Chokehold”, he says “and I know you heard the last song, about the girl that didn’t last long”, speaking about the song, “Makeout Club”. He has use this method in his writing for more than 10 songs over the course if all 3 albums.

Currently nominated for 2 MTV VMA Awards, Best New Artist, and Best Group. They also performed on MTV Live (which is how I was introduced to them) a few months ago.

Gym Class Heroes have a young Retro, Hip Hop, Pop, Alternative sound & look. You have Travis, who is covered in tattoos, from his neck down. He also has 3-inch ear plugs and a lip ring - not what an average rapper looks like. But he looks to be of some Hispanic decent, and rocks the common urban wears. Their guitarist, Disashi, is Africian American.

In their video for “Clothes Off”, they have their dancers Crunk dancing, and the dancers are Black. The people in the video are all in their early 20’s. And you can tell the band members are not old. Definitely a band that the 18 & older crowd can enjoy. They bring a fun feeling back to music. Travis can tell a story, showing that his lyrical skills needed the acknowledgment that it received. And the rest of the group makes the music sound so fresh and funky. “Viva La White Girl” has one of the most funkiest beats I’ve heard in some time. And when you hear the lyrics, as Travis has explained, it is not about being addicted to cocaine, it is about being addicted to music!!!

Like Levar Burton (Reading Rainbow) says, ” But you don’t have to take my word for it”.

VIVA LA WHITE GIRL (live- July ‘07)

CUPID’S CHOKEHOLD/ BREAKFEST IN AMERICA

NEW FRIEND REQUEST (for the Myspace folks :) )

Hope you like ‘em. Cuz I luv ‘em!!

Floetry has broken up?!?!?!?!?! Ummm WTF???
dceb4eb9-6ee9-4946-bca1-bc55dd7a30a4.jpg

I haven’t learned the root of this breakup, but it looks as though the lyricist (aka floacist) of the duo, Natalie Stewart, is parting and being replaced by Amanda Diva.
l_c9b6be05679fd8cbca16997caa009466.jpg

You should remember Amanda Diva, she was like the first VJ for Sucker Free on MTV2.
Well, since then she has been working on her music career. If I’m not mistaken Amanda, writes, sings, and raps. She is definitely multi-talented, because she also draws.

Currently she can be heard on Sirius Satalite Radio.

I’m happy to hear that she is moving her career in a positive way. But to replace one of the women that made up such a beautiful group, leaves you with very BIG shoes to fill. Not to mention alot of slack from devout fans.

You can catch the new duo on the Floetry Remixed Tour, which starts today in DC. Peep their tour dates on Amanda Diva’s Myspace page & You can hear Amanda Diva on a Floetry track to make your own judgement.
Peep how she changed the photo of Floetry above on her myspace page too

GOOD LUCK AMANDA!!!!!!
I know you got skills-nillz

Major Label vs. An Independent Label July 18, 2007

Filed under: tunes — flashyjazzy @ 2:59 pm

What is the difference between the more ’mainstream’ artist and the ’not –so- ‘mainstream’ artist? That is a question that some music lovers can’t answer. For some, it is a question that has no importance. They don’t care why T-Pain is getting more spins on the radio and on BET than Hi-Tek. Or, why so many people are only interested in the music that they hear on the radio or television. Many of us have learned the skill of seeking out the music we like to hear. But the sad thing is a vast majority of people believe that if an artist is not played on the radio or TV than they are not really artists. You know ‘outta sight, outta mind’ kind of thinking.

Over the last 2 1/2 years, we’ve all heard the statement: “the state of Hip Hop” as a frequently discussed topic among the Hip Hop sector. Almost all major magazines have written about the ‘state of Hip Hop’. Personally, I thought Hip Hop took a turn for the worst when all you heard was 50 Cent, G-Unit, and Crunk music - pun intended. I personally, am tired of having stupid ass jingles in my head.

I was introduced and explored “conscious” hip hop, seriously, about four years ago. I was familiar with the few artists that made it on to MTV or BET, playing their random singles. The problem with me growing up and listening to music was that I only thought that the music that my friends and peers were listening to was the music that I should listen to. So in turn that was the music that I would go and purchase.

With that being said I guess you can say that I am coming from a familiar place when you think about all the people out there who are not familiar with exploring music beyond what their peers are listening to. The way people crap on underground or grassroots Hip Hop is the same way.

I recently worked for an internet music company and most of the questions that we got from the customers were “ what is independent?”. And so I felt that the question was valid, but how do you answer that question with a simple answer? You can’t. To some extent you have to be familiar with the in’s and out’s of the music business in order to grasp what is the difference between an independent label and a major record label.

For the beginners and intermediate folks who appreciate music but aren’t too knowlegable of the logistics, I’ve listed the key elements of a major record label vs. an independent label a.k.a. indie label.

WHAT IS A RECORD COMPANY?

• A company that manages recording related brands and trademarks.
• Owns their labels, the master recordings, and any other supporting businesses such as DVDs.
• Consists of Manufacturers, Distributors, and Labels
• Can have smaller companies under the Company umbrella, but allows the smaller company to conduct their own business

EXAMPLE OF A MAJOR RECORD COMPANY:
Universal is the BIG Record Company, Def Jam Records is a music label – Def Jam South is a label under Def Jam’s music label, but still under Universal

WHAT IS A MUSIC GROUP?

• Provides distribution for the recording artists.
• There are 4 Music Groups (MAJOR) – Sony, BMG, Universal, and Warner
• Each of the “big four” consists of many less large companies and labels serving under different regions and markets
• Keeps contracts with the recording artists
• Maintain contracts with production companies
• Organizes all marketing, production, licensing, and copyright protection of the recordings and/or videos

WHAT IS A PUBLISHING COMPANY?

• Prepares music to be publicly sold
• Has their own rights to music that is published
• Can be under the Record Companies umbrella, but exists separately, even if sharing the company name or brand
• They represents the rights in the compositions - i.e. the written music, but not the recorded song

WHAT IS A MAJOR RECORD LABEL?

• One that owns its own distribution channel
• Signs, market, publicize, develop, and promote as well as provide sales support to the larger distribution companies for their releases and artists
• May be made up of a Record Group which would be controlled by a Music Group
• If signed to a Major Record Label you will pay for
a) packaging
b) promotion (discounts, free cds, some advertising)
c) overseas promotions
d) music availability (MP3 downloads, SACD, or DVD Audio)
e) breakage (even if there is none)

EXAMPLE OF A MAJOR RECORD LABEL:
Interscope is the Record Company -Aftermath is the Record Label

WHAT IS AN INDEPENDENT RECORD COMPANY?

• A smaller record company
• A company that is not under the control of one of the 4 biggest/ major record companies

WHAT IS AN INDEPENDENT RECORD LABEL?

• Almost any label that releases non-mainstream music, regardless of its corporate structure
• Without the funding of or outside the organizations of a Major Record Label
• Can still be under the control of a large corporation with complex structures
• Can also have Major-Label shareholders
• If a Major Company owns 50% or less of the total shares in
• Can be created and managed by Major Label Artists, but are partially owned by the Major Label Parent (sometimes referred to as Vanity Labels - see definition below)

EXAMPLE OF AN INDEPENDENT RECORD LABEL:
Lil’ Jon’s TVT Records, KOCH Records

**Vanity Labels are intended to satisfy established, powerful artists and/or to give them independence in discovering and promoting new talent. The new talent will usually not be owned or controlled by that major company

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT INDEPENDENT LABELS:

A. The 1960’s and 1980’s were the most profitable periods
B. Smaller Independent Labels operate different from Major Labels
1) Waive exclusive claims on recordings and other rights
2) Allow artists to retain their recordings rights
3) Profit sharing on projects rather than fixing a royalty
4) Making contracts based on projects rather than a period of years
C. Larger Independent Labels may operate the same as a Major Label
D. Some prefer to use the term “Indie Label”

Additional Facts:

• D-I-Y or Do-It-Yourself companies are also considered Independent
• The difference with profits from an Independent Label & a D-I-Y label is the profits of a D-I-Y label is 100% whereas Independent is 50/50
• A Distributor or Distribution Company is the middleman between the manufactirer and the retailer. After the music is manufactured it is sent to the Distributor who then sends it to the reatil stores. The Distributor has their own contracts with retailers or customer. The Distributor answers the question of how to get the product to the consumer.

So with all these facts and examples of what makes a Major Label and an Independent Label, I hope that you have some questions answered. It really is all techincal mumbo-gumbo.

The benefit of being signed to a Major Record Company/ Label is that as an artist all you have to do is create and perform the music. Because that is mainly your only duty, you lose money, because the Record Company oversees and handles how your music is manufactured and distributed. All of this you pay for of course. The Record Company also gives you advances, sometimes more than what your album will gross in sales. This can be a bad loan, if you do not make good on the payments. And you can end up owing the Record Company instead of them owing you. As an artist I believe you also pay for your videos. And the profits are not 50/50. You receive a negotiated percentage that may or may not work in your favor.

Now with Indie Record Labels, the number of retailers may not be as many as with a Major Company. But you would receive a greater profit. You also do not have any real form of marketing. That would probably be something that you would have to do on your own accord.

There are many differences with the two companies, but I think that what counts the most is the marketing and promotion of an artist and the distribution. The reason being, you can make a great album, but if you do not have the right marketing then no one will think to buy your album. They may not even know that you had an album drop. And the distribution deal is what also matters, because you would want your album sold at as many reatil locations as possible. With a large number of album sales, you would have a profitable pay-off.

And if you have the rights to your master recording copies then you can use that music on other albums, for more profit!

Hope I helped you with this question!!

AllHipHop & iTunes give us FREE music July 5, 2007

Filed under: gifts & sentimentals, tunes — flashyjazzy @ 8:11 am

logo1.gif
In celebration of Black Music Month (June) AllHipHop and iTunes are giving away a Hip-Hop Playlist. There are 21 songs on the playlist that AllHipHop says:

The editors at AllHipHop.com have combed through dozens of songs from iTunes store to provide a diverse playlist that features popular Hip-Hop, conscious Hip-Hop and even spiritual Hip-Hop tracks.

And I will say for as much indie (independent - check back later I’ll have an article to explain what this means in more intricate detail) music that I listen to some of the songs I’ve never heard, so it makes receiving a gift, have more value.

You have artists like, KRS-One & Marley Marl (from their new album), X-Clan ft Damian Marley, Mac Dre, Dead Prez Presents M-1, J Dilla, and Lifesavas to name a few.

Personally, I loves, loves to be introduce to new music. The mainstream stuff is cool but I like the underground and less appreciated artists, they give you better quality music, and I think they take more chances, because it’s their music and there are no real restraints to how far they can go.

So, after I’ve put in my 2¢ on the matter…

The FREE playlist is available for the month of July. It is available as a one time thing, and spread the love- tell your friends about it. Who knows, if it has a positive turn out maybe there’ll be more offers and promos with AllHipHop.com and iTunes.
